The Gawler Greenway currently (Nov. 2019) exists as a bikeway connector running from the Adelaide Parklands bikeways to the ‘interchange’ of three major bikeways (yet to be completed) at the eastern end of the Port River Expressway (PREXY) where it joins with the Northern Connector (NEXY) and Salisbury Highway. Both the PREXY & NEXY will eventually have their own Greenway bike paths which will connect to the Gawler Greenway via an underpass under the Port Expressway and pathways through the wetlands on the southern side. The Gawler Greenway will eventually extend all the way to Gawler, following the alignment of the Gawler rail line.
From DPTI’s Gawler Greenway page: “The Gawler Greenway is a long-term vision for a cycling route and improved access to public transport extending from the City to Gawler. The alignment typically follows the Gawler railway line. The route is substantially completed between the Adelaide Park Lands (at the North Adelaide railway station) and Regency Road and connects to the Adelaide Railway Station via bike lanes on War Memorial Drive. When completed, the Greenway will link to several key cycling routes include the Dry Creek Trail, Little Para River Trail, Jack Bobridge Track, Stuart O Grady Bikeway and a new path to be constructed alongside the Northern Connector.”

Recent updates from DPTI indicate that the section of the Gawler Greenway between Regency Road and the eastern end of the Port River Expressway will be completed by mid-October, 2019. Further information from the PA/E Council & the Regency to Pym Street South Road Upgrade Project (R2P) has confirmed that an associated off-road ‘linking’ pathway – the Regency Connector (see below) – will also be constructed along the northern side of Regency Road to connect the Gawler Greenway route to PA/E’s ‘East-West Connector’ bike route. This will facilitate bicycle transport from this N-W sector through to the Adelaide CBD and destinations along the way.

The Gawler Greenway route and all of the associated Greenways and bikeways to which it will link have come about through community action & advocacy – by actively participating over a decade or so in the development & implementation of Council Bike Plans, by proposing major new Bike Route Initiatives to the State Government and by ensuring that the latter are also supported by both Councils and by peak cycling organisations (such as BISA).
