OHG Development: First surveyed by the PortBUG in August 2005, the O/H Greenway route is outlined in some detail at the DPTI Infrastructure website. It aims to directly connect The Port to the Adelaide City CBD via a low-stress, secure & convenient bike-way that avoids main roads, provides safe crossings when they are encountered & is accessible & enjoyable for all! Completion of sections of the Greenway closer to the CBD have been dependent on large road & rail projects such as the Torrens Junction Project at Bowden & the raised South Road bike & railway overpass at Croydon. It is anticipated that these will be complete by early 2018. Until so, detours will be in place to ensure bike route continuity between Port & the City CBD.
To the East of Port Adelaide the route follows existing ‘railway boulevards’ running adjacent to the rail reserve (Day, Buller and Belmore Terraces are the best examples). All of these roads run more or less parallel to Port Road & some 100-150 metres away on the Northern side of the rail line. Greenway users will have easy access to the shopping and service precincts on Port Road. The route will also give easy access to several other local shopping, service & recreational areas along the way, including those at Queen & Rosetta Streets at Croydon, Woodville Road, Fussell Place at Alberton & new areas at St Clair and Bowden. The Greenway will assist in revitalising service & retail areas adjacent to several of the rail stations along the line.
Although most of the route travels on existing ‘railway boulevards’ & other local roads & bikeways there are several new stretches of off-road bike pathway that provide key linkages between them. This approach has minimised costs & ensures maximum access for all users, whether riding the whole length or just from one suburb to another. It also brings the Greenway closer to street-front businesses & recreational facilities, ensuring economic benefits for traders & social benefits for local communities along the way.

New pathway lighting will also be installed through the St Clair housing development later in 2017.
The Outer Harbour Greenway will be a significant opportunity for the development by Councils of other more localised Active Mobility Networks (bikeways & footpaths) as well as other initiatives contributing to more active & sustainable lifestyles. The Greenway will be a catalyst for many new initiatives & we hope to see renewed attention and commitment to its ongoing development by all three of the Councils involved in coming years.
