The City of Charles Sturt have called for community feedback on the proposed closure & detour of the Outer Harbor Greenway at Bowden for approx. 12 months.
An application has been received from developers for this closure to facilitate new housing construction at the ‘Nightingale Bowden’ site for one year from July 2021 to July 2022. The Greenway would be closed between Drayton Street and the Station Place Footbridge (see map below).

Over the course of construction and the proposed 12-month pathway closure Greenway users would be detoured approx 300 metres as per the route shown below.

Please – absolutely no way!
This is the major bikeway from the West with hundreds of adults and children cycling away from traffic every day in both directions.
This would never be proposed for a road – a one year diversion on Port Road anyone?
Looking at the overhead map – they have access to the site from every other side. So this is just lazy planning. Just easier for them to inconvenience hundreds of cyclists every day. Please, no.
Also sets a terrible precedent for the many future developments to come. Cyclists should not be second class citizens in Charles Sturt.

Not impressed. This hasn’t been open for long and now there’s plans to shut it and detour into traffic, why can’t the builder supply a covered walkway, they have 3 sides of site access

Preferably the path would be permanently closed or speed reducing devices used to slow down cyclist at the part of the greenway where it crosses the the bridge that serves at the main entrance to the station. People with disabilities, old age or people who just have mobility issues find it really unsafe to cross the greenway when cyclist come flying through no bell ringing, now slowing down and no giving way to pedestrians like the giveaway marketing’s ask of them. Support the closing for building: will not supply personal details for in fear of repercussions from the cycling community, I already get abused enough by cyclist when crossing the path.

Hi Anon, Unfortunately the PortBUG blog cannot provide a useful forum for either discussion of issues such as you raise or feedback to Council. If you’d like to discuss such matters in a respectful & safe environment I strongly suggest you do so at our facebook forum – Port Adelaide Bike Forum (administered by PortBUG). If you have constructive suggestions to improve safety on the Greenway at Bowden please forward them to the confidential City of Charles Sturt via the Have Your Say form or the email address we have provided in this post. It sounds to me that this may be most appropriate given your stated anxieties! Note that CCS will not respond if you cannot provide whatever ID they ask for. Also note that the Outer Harbor Greenway has taken over 15 years of combined effort (from both the PA/E & CCS Council’s communities & State Governments) to build. It has become the main ‘trunk bike path’ serving the NW suburbs of Adelaide. Being realistic, it is not going to be ‘permanently closed’ as you suggest! A more practical approach to your safety concerns at the Bowden Rail Station would be to liaise with the very competent transport safety & engineering staff at the CCS. PortBUG Admin.

No, please don’t close.
This is a major bike way for the western suburbs to access the city. Generally it is a safe passage for both cyclists and pedestrians.
This pathway has been long fought for by the cycling community and needs to remain open and safe.
An aside, I’m sick of developers disrupting communities for their own gain.

May I suggest the path be duplicated on southern side of railway first so bikes retain a dedicated bike path. After construction there would be two paths at least as far as Chief St

I didn’t see this until now, but I’m guess I’m lucky I was able to make a comment to the council before the deadline.
Nightingale Bowden claims to be cyclist/transit friendly, but apparently that doesn’t apply to cyclists and pedestrians during construction. Sigh.
I don’t see why they cannot just set up the stretcher stairs on another side of the construction site.

So they’re going to close the bikeway for 8 months, FFS!
The other construction between second street and the bikeway hasn’t needed to build stairwells at the back of the site, it seems like they were just too lazy to consider alternatives.
